Build live location features in a day

What is common between a home delivery service for retailers in Paris an address service for logistics companies in Nairobi and a bike sharing service for commuters in Chennai? Firstly location features are a core part of their product stack. Secondly their developers use an API that just works in their city country and continent. Lastly they were able to build their location feature on the same day as signing up with HyperTrack.

Developers use third party APIs for control flexibility and speed to build product features. From the time we first built HyperTrack it has been our goal to be useful for developers across the globe building live location features for their unique products. We iterated and refined our self-serve onboarding while watching hundreds of developers build dozens of use cases across all inhabited continents with HyperTrack. Until one day we saw a developer plug the SDK in his app and see live locations and activities of users in under 6 minutes. We reached out to these developers to share their stories with us. We share a few of those stories in this post.

Zeloce

French startupZeloce has a built a service for retail stores selling furniture appliances home improvement and construction equipment. Retailers use Zeloce to provide instant delivery to in-store customers to carry large purchases back home. Their home grown delivery management app worked well with a small numbers of drivers in the initial phase. However dispatch and driver availability became an issue with the growing number of drivers as business scaled up. Developers wanted to use live location of drivers through the app to assign orders get real-time alerts for delays offer live tracking to customers and monitor operations. Zeloce CTO Joseph says:

“We strongly believe in HyperTrack product. Your platform saved us hundreds of engineer hours. Before I discovered HyperTrack we thought about building our own real-time tracking system because the other solutions are too much complicated to integrate. What we thought was going to take 1 year to build we did in 1 week with Hypertrack.”

OkHi

Kenyan startup OkHi is on a mission to enable the 4 billion people in the world without physical addresses to be included in service economy of the world. Their solution is to give them an OkHi address with a ge0-tag and photo of the house’s gate. They have built an app for their logistics partners who service these customers.

They wanted to build a feature for these partners to share a live tracking link with their customers. In 2014 they started using a different location stack and experienced challenges like high latency in locations inflexibility in the APIs and hard work to make it work for their flow. They looked for alternatives and found HyperTrack. OkHi lead engineer Ramogi says:

“I started looking out for an alternative and found HyperTrack. I was initially skeptical about if I should put in a new SDK into my app. But it was just a matter of few hours to put their SDK in my test app and see how it works. I did that over a weekend and started observing the results. I was amazed by the accuracy of location data that the SDK was able to generate while consuming minimal battery.”

Vroom

Chennai-based Vroom is an on-demand transportation service that commuters can use to get from one place to the other and consumers can use to order local pickups and deliveries. Live location tracking has become a ubiquitous feature for on-demand transportation apps. Commuters want to track their drivers as they wait at the pickup locations. The driver customer and Vroom want to track the progress of the trip for billing monitoring sharing and future review.

The developer at Vroom was unhappy with the accuracy of locations he was able to get with his first implementation. He looked for solutions online found HyperTrack and decided to test its accuracy. He plugged the SDK into the Vroom driver app to review the accuracy and reliability of locations. After getting comfortable with it he integrated with actions to track pickups and drops. After tracking the pickups and drops on the dashboard he integrated the tracking experience into his Vroom customer app.

Vroom was able to go live in production within two days of integration testing and bug fixes. Hundreds of customers are now able to track their rides each day. Vroom product lead Vijay says:

“In just the first couple of days of test use our HyperTrack integration has already shown us marked positive results. We were able to break our daily rides record and we partially attribute this success to our live location tracking feature.”
